LENGTHS OF STAY WHEN TRAVELING ABROAD

Consider these four levels of cultural immersion:

1. Less than a month is barely enough time for a truly cultural experience, unless you know someone there, or can manage to engage someone who is a native in a genuine conversation.
2. 1-3 months is an "immersion experience." You can Learn some of the native language or some of the native foods, music and dances!
3. 3 - 6 months is an "immersion experience." You can make some lasting friendships, maybe find a job, really get the lay of the land, and be more fluent culturally.
4. 6 months to 1 year - or longer - is really "living abroad." You will be very fluent in Something by the time you leave!

Whatever length of time you stay, Enjoy Life on Purpose!

Appreciate your accommodations. Americans are spoiled becaue they enjoy a great quality of life in the US.  Appreciate the hospitality of other countries, the differences in culture. Don't be an Arrogant American. Understand that your host is doing THEIR best and tthey are probably rolling out THEIR Red Carpet.

Be gracious and kind, and when you get back to the US, you will appreciate what you have at home.
